What is the TCPA?

The TCPA, or Telephone Consumer Protection Act of 1991, is the US federal law that restricts telemarketing calls, autodialed calls, prerecorded or artificial-voice calls and texts. The FCC writes and enforces the rules under it, and consumers can sue for $500 to $1,500 per violating call.

For outbound teams the core rules are consent before autodialed or artificial-voice calls to mobile numbers and before artificial-voice calls to landlines, calling only between 8am and 9pm in the recipient's local time, honoring the National Do Not Call Registry and internal opt-out lists, and identifying the caller. Our article What is TCPA compliance for AI calls? walks through each rule and how it applies to AI voice agents.
