What is voicemail detection?

Voicemail detection is a dialer or voice agent's ability to tell, within the first seconds of an answered call, whether a person or a voicemail greeting picked up. The system then either starts the conversation or waits for the beep to leave a message or hang up.

Good detection keeps reps and agents out of voicemail boxes and keeps people from hearing a pause before anyone speaks. Mistakes cost in both directions: a person treated as a machine gets a recording or a hang-up, and a machine treated as a person gets half a pitch. Our full guide to voicemail detection covers how it works and how to measure accuracy.
